Shared services are centralized functions that deliver common capabilities to many business units from one service layer. In enterprise IT, this often includes identity and access management, patching, logging, email, cloud administration, finance platforms, or the help desk. The goal is to reduce duplication, improve consistency, and make governance easier across the organization.
In cyber security, shared services matter because they concentrate both control and risk. A well-run shared service can enforce uniform security baselines, faster detection, and consistent incident response. But if attackers compromise a central platform, they may gain access to many systems at once, increasing the blast radius. Defenders therefore use least privilege, strong segmentation, resilient authentication, change control, and detailed monitoring to keep shared services efficient without turning them into a single point of failure.
