Shader compilation

The process of preparing graphics code for a GPU to execute.

Shader compilation is the process of turning graphics code into instructions a GPU can execute. In games and other 3D software, shaders control how objects are lit, textured, and displayed, so compiling them is required before rendering can run efficiently.

In cyber security, shader compilation matters because it depends on complex GPU drivers and hardware-specific behavior. Bugs in shader compilers can cause crashes, hangs, or, in some cases, security vulnerabilities in the graphics stack. Defenders use shader compilation during testing to catch incompatibilities, performance problems, and unstable driver behavior before deployment. Attackers may try to abuse malformed shader code or driver weaknesses to disrupt systems or probe for exploitable flaws.
