SEPA payroll XML

payment files used to process salary transfers and carry sensitive employee banking data.

SEPA payroll XML is a structured payment file used by organizations to initiate salary transfers through the Single Euro Payments Area. It follows a defined XML format so banks and payroll systems can exchange payment instructions reliably. These files often include employee names, IBANs, amounts, payment references, and sometimes internal payroll identifiers, which makes them highly sensitive.

In cyber security, SEPA payroll XML matters because a stolen or altered file can expose employee banking data, enable fraud, or disrupt salary runs. Attackers may steal these files during ransomware intrusions to increase extortion pressure, or they may modify payment details to redirect funds. Defenders reduce the risk by restricting access, encrypting payroll archives, separating payroll and banking permissions, logging file creation and export events, and validating payment files before submission. Because payroll data combines identity and financial information, even limited exposure can create legal, operational, and privacy impact.
