Semantic clustering

A method for grouping related samples by similarity in meaning or structure.

Semantic clustering is a technique for grouping malware samples or artifacts by similarity in meaning, behavior, or structure rather than by exact bytes or filenames. It can compare strings, prompts, API references, code patterns, and other metadata to find samples that look related even when attackers change packing, hashes, or surface details.

In cyber security, this matters because adversaries often reuse development habits and operational clues across a campaign. Defenders can use semantic clustering to connect files that share the same AI provider endpoint, similar embedded prompts, or comparable control-flow ideas, then investigate them as a family. It is especially useful in hunting workflows where execution has not yet occurred: analysts can prioritize suspicious samples, build relationship graphs, and reduce noisy hits. The method is powerful for triage, but it is not proof of malicious intent on its own, so clustered results still need manual validation.
