Self-hosted collaboration

A document-sharing setup operated by the business itself rather than a public SaaS provider.

Self-hosted collaboration is a document-sharing and co-editing setup run by the organization itself, instead of by a public SaaS provider. The business hosts the application, storage, authentication, backups, and network access on its own server, private cloud, or local infrastructure. This gives tighter control over where files are stored and who can reach them, which is important for firms that need internal data handling or custom integration.

In cyber security, the main point is that the trust boundary moves inward. The provider is no longer responsible for keeping the service secure and available; the business is. That means patching, certificate management, access control, logging, backup testing, and restore planning become security tasks, not just IT chores. Attackers often target these environments through weak credentials, exposed admin panels, unpatched software, or misconfigured storage. Defenders value self-hosted collaboration when they can maintain strong operational discipline, because control improves visibility, but only if the system is kept hardened and recoverable.
