Self-extracting archive (SFX)

An executable archive that unpacks its contents when run.

A self-extracting archive is an executable file that contains compressed data and a small program, called the extraction stub, that unpacks the contents when run. Users may see it as a convenient installer or bundled delivery package, but the stub is active code, not just a container. That makes SFX files important in cyber security because the wrapper itself can launch programs, drop files, or start malicious code before any extracted content looks suspicious.

Attackers abuse SFX archives to hide payloads inside what appears to be a normal setup package, sometimes alongside legitimate software to lower suspicion. They may also modify the stub to trigger in-memory execution or other stealthy behavior, which can make file-based inspection miss the real threat. Defenders should analyze both the archive contents and the executable wrapper, check the stub’s behavior, and treat unusual installers as code paths that deserve the same scrutiny as standalone executables.
