Security Service Edge (SSE)

A cloud-delivered security model that combines multiple access and protection functions.

Security Service Edge, or SSE, is a cloud-delivered security model that combines several access and protection controls in one platform. It commonly includes secure web gateway functions, cloud access security brokering, zero trust network access, and related policy enforcement services. Instead of forcing traffic through a single office perimeter, SSE applies security in the cloud, closer to users, apps, and internet destinations.

SSE matters because modern work is distributed. When employees connect from homes, branches, and mobile networks, security teams need the same rules to follow them everywhere. In practice, SSE helps block phishing sites, restrict risky cloud services, inspect web traffic, and enforce identity-based access. Attackers benefit when users move outside the traditional network boundary; defenders use SSE to keep visibility and control even when no one is on the corporate LAN. It is often chosen when organizations want centralized policy, simpler operations, and consistent protection for web, SaaS, and remote access traffic.
