Security Gateway

A network enforcement device that applies firewall and protection rules to traffic.

A security gateway is a network enforcement device that inspects traffic and applies firewall, filtering, and threat-protection rules. It sits between trusted and untrusted networks and decides what is allowed to pass, block, or be inspected more closely. In many environments, it is the first line of defense for a perimeter, branch office, or remote-access entry point.

Security gateways matter because they operate in a privileged position: if an attacker bypasses or compromises them, they may reach internal systems that would otherwise be shielded. Defenders use them to segment networks, enforce policy, and reduce exposure. In real attacks, adversaries often target the gateway itself through exposed management interfaces, software flaws, or weak configuration, since control over the device can expose large parts of the network. That is why patching, access restriction, and monitoring are critical for security gateways, not just for the services behind them.
