Security configuration

The policy settings that determine how a system allows, blocks, logs, or routes activity.

Security configuration is the set of policy settings that tells a system how to allow, block, log, inspect, or route activity. It includes firewall rules, access controls, alert thresholds, network placement, and administrator permissions. In practice, this is the control layer that decides what the security tools do, not just what data they see.

It matters because attackers often aim at configuration rather than raw traffic. If they can change policy in a firewall, console, or cloud platform, they may open unwanted access, suppress logs, weaken authentication, or redirect traffic. Defenders protect these settings with strict admin separation, least privilege, change review, secure backups, and monitoring for unexpected policy edits. A well-hardened configuration can stop an intrusion even when the software itself is not perfect.
