Secure wiping

Removing stored data so it cannot be easily recovered from a device.

Secure wiping is the process of removing stored data from a device so it cannot be easily recovered with forensic tools or normal recovery software. It is different from simply deleting files or doing a basic factory reset, which may leave recoverable traces on storage media. In practice, secure wiping may involve cryptographic erasure, verified overwrite methods, or using built-in device features that destroy encryption keys.

It matters in cyber security because old phones, laptops, and removable drives often contain passwords, session tokens, messages, photos, and business data. If a device is sold, recycled, or repurposed without proper wiping, that data can be exposed to attackers or careless buyers. Defenders use secure wiping before resale, disposal, or redeployment, and they often combine it with full-disk encryption, account deprovisioning, and firmware checks to reduce residual risk.
