Secret scoping

Limiting which jobs, runners, or environments can access sensitive credentials.

Secret scoping is the practice of limiting which jobs, runners, branches, or environments can access sensitive credentials such as API keys, cloud tokens, and deployment passwords. Instead of exposing one broad secret to every build, defenders assign the smallest possible set of permissions to each automated task. This reduces the chance that a compromised step can read and reuse high-value credentials.

It matters because build systems often execute third-party code, including package install scripts, and that code may try to steal secrets from environment variables or local files. If a poisoned dependency runs in a job that can reach broad credentials, the attacker can exfiltrate tokens in one pass. With good secret scoping, the same job may only see low-risk or temporary secrets, limiting the blast radius and making credential theft far less useful. In practice, teams combine scoped secrets with separate runners, short-lived tokens, and environment approvals.
