Seat-based plan

A subscription model that assigns access to individual users within an organization.

A seat-based plan is a subscription model that gives access to named users, or "seats," inside an organization. Each seat is tied to one person or account, so the organization pays for a set number of users rather than a shared pool of usage. This matters in cyber security because the seat is both a billing unit and an access-control unit: if an account is assigned a seat, it may gain access to sensitive tools, data, or administrative features.

In real environments, seat-based licensing is common for SaaS platforms, collaboration tools, and enterprise AI products. Security teams care because a compromised licensed account can be used immediately without needing to bypass the subscription system. Defenders reduce this risk by using strong identity controls such as SSO, MFA, and SCIM-based provisioning, then removing seats quickly when staff leave or roles change. Seat reviews also help prevent excess access and make usage monitoring more precise.
