Screen Sharing

macOS remote desktop feature that lets another user view or control a Mac.

Screen Sharing is macOS’s built-in remote desktop feature. It lets a remote user view a Mac’s screen and, if permitted, control the keyboard and mouse. Apple supports this through screen-sharing and VNC-style access, so the service effectively acts as a remote administration gateway.

In cyber security, Screen Sharing matters because any remote-control service expands the attack surface. If it is exposed to untrusted networks or protected with weak credentials, attackers may use it for unauthorized access, data theft, or remote code execution when flaws exist in the service. Defenders reduce risk by disabling Screen Sharing when it is not needed, restricting access to trusted users and networks, placing it behind VPN or segmentation, and patching macOS quickly. Treat it like privileged infrastructure, not a convenience feature.
