Sanctions compliance is the set of controls an organization uses to avoid doing business, moving money, or sharing services with people, companies, or regions that are restricted by law. In cybersecurity, it matters because remote hiring, vendor management, cloud subscriptions, and payment processing can all create hidden exposure if a person or payment path is linked to a sanctioned party.
Security teams use sanctions screening during onboarding, procurement, and finance checks to compare names, addresses, bank accounts, and ownership records against restricted-party lists. In real attacks, adversaries may hide behind false identities, shell companies, or third-party contractors to gain access or receive payments. Good sanctions controls help block that trust abuse, reduce legal risk, and prevent infrastructure, access, or funds from being routed into prohibited relationships.
