Salvage

Reusing working components from damaged equipment instead of restoring the full device.

Salvage means recovering working parts from damaged or discarded equipment instead of restoring the whole device. In electronics, a board may be too broken to repair economically, but individual components such as sensors, connectors, memory chips, or power parts can still be reused. Salvage work is a practical way to extract value from hardware that is no longer reliable as a complete system.

In cyber security, salvage matters because damaged devices can still contain useful or dangerous artifacts. Defenders may salvage components during forensic analysis to recover logs, firmware, keys, or data from failed systems. Attackers may do the same to mine chips for secrets, bypass controls, or repurpose hardware for malicious implants. The key security lesson is that a broken device is not automatically inert: data may survive on storage, configuration may remain in flash, and reused parts can carry hidden trust risks if they are not verified before redeployment.
