Safe design is the practice of building protections into a system so security does not depend on users making the right choice every time. In cyber security, that means setting secure defaults, limiting access by design, validating input, logging sensitive actions, and reducing the chance that a mistake becomes a breach.
This matters because attackers often exploit human error: weak passwords, confusing settings, careless sharing, or skipped updates. A safely designed system makes those mistakes harder to turn into damage. For example, a platform can default to private accounts for minors, require strong authentication for risky actions, and block dangerous file types before they reach users. Defenders use safe design to lower attack surface, improve compliance, and make protections durable even when users are distracted or under pressure.
