Runtime control plane

The layer that governs actions, policies, and visibility while a system is running.

A runtime control plane is the policy and oversight layer that governs a system while it is actively running. It decides what actions are allowed, applies rules for authorization and usage, and records activity for later review. Unlike design-time security, which focuses on how a system is built, a runtime control plane watches what the system actually does in production.

In cyber security, this matters because many attacks succeed only after a trusted workload starts acting with real credentials. A runtime control plane can reduce that risk by enforcing least privilege, checking each request against policy, limiting spend or resource use, and creating audit logs that show who did what and when. It is especially important for AI agents, where tools, data sources, and permissions can multiply quickly. Defenders use these controls to spot abnormal behavior, block unsafe actions, and preserve visibility when automated systems begin to operate on their own.
