RTOS

A real-time operating system designed for devices that must respond predictably and quickly.

A real-time operating system (RTOS) is built for devices that must respond within strict time limits, such as PLCs, sensors, medical equipment, and other embedded systems. Unlike general-purpose operating systems, an RTOS prioritizes predictability: tasks are scheduled so critical actions happen fast and in the right order.

RTOS matters in cyber security because many industrial and embedded products rely on it for network services, control logic, and safety functions. If an RTOS-based component contains a memory bug, weak service, or exposed protocol, attackers may gain a path into highly privileged device functions. In real attacks, defenders often see RTOS-linked code in firmware, shared stacks, and device libraries, which can let one vulnerability affect several product lines. For defense, knowing the RTOS helps with firmware review, patch matching, service reduction, and identifying whether a device family shares risky components with others.
