Root RCE

Remote code execution that gives an attacker the highest local privilege on a system.

Root RCE means remote code execution that lands an attacker at root, the highest local privilege on a system. In practice, it is more dangerous than ordinary RCE because the attacker can run commands, change configurations, install persistence, disable defenses, and control sensitive services with full authority.

In real attacks, root RCE often comes from chaining smaller weaknesses: a wireless setup flaw, a vulnerable helper service, unsafe input handling, or a broken trust boundary. Once code runs as root, defenders must assume the device can be fully manipulated. Mitigations focus on reducing exposure, separating privileged services, hardening input validation, limiting wireless and network access, and monitoring for unexpected root-level processes or configuration changes.
