Root-level privileges

The highest system permission level on macOS and other Unix-like systems.

Root-level privileges are the highest permission level on macOS and other Unix-like systems. A process or user with root access can read or change almost any file, alter security settings, start or stop services, and manage other accounts. In practice, “root” is the difference between limited access and full control of a host.

In cyber security, root access matters because many attacks aim to escalate privileges after an initial foothold. If an attacker can exploit a vulnerable service, steal credentials, or abuse a misconfigured admin feature, reaching root can turn a small compromise into complete system takeover. Defenders try to prevent this with least-privilege design, strong authentication, patching, segmentation, and disabling unnecessary remote administration features. When a flaw is said to expose root-level file access, it means the attacker may be able to bypass normal protections and reach sensitive data or system-critical components.
