Rollout pause

Stopping distribution of an update to limit further impact.

A rollout pause is the temporary stop of a software update or patch distribution while administrators investigate a problem. Instead of sending the package to every device, the update is held back so the blast radius stays small. This is a standard release-control measure in enterprise environments and a key part of incident response for update-related failures.

In cyber security, a rollout pause matters because updates can affect availability, authentication, or endpoint stability. If a patch breaks an application, triggers false malware alerts, or behaves like a supply-chain compromise, pausing distribution limits further disruption and gives defenders time to validate the package, test on canary systems, and prepare rollback steps. Attackers also target update channels, so a pause can buy time while teams check whether the problem is a defect or a security event.
