Role-based compliance

A control model where duties depend on what part of the AI content chain an actor occupies.

Role-based compliance is a control model in which legal and security duties depend on the actor’s position in a workflow, not just on the technology being used. In an AI content chain, a developer, deployer, publisher, or integrator may each have different disclosure or marking obligations. The same output can therefore require different controls depending on who created it, who modified it, and who exposed it to users.

This matters in cyber security because compliance is only effective when tied to real operations. A generic “AI generated” label can be misleading if it is applied by the wrong actor or at the wrong stage. Attackers can also abuse weak role mapping by stripping metadata, rehosting content, or passing synthetic material through intermediaries to blur responsibility. Defenders use role-based compliance to assign clear ownership, enforce workflow checkpoints, preserve provenance, and ensure that the right warning, label, or technical marker reaches the right audience.
