robots meta tag

A page-level instruction that can limit snippets, previews, or indexing behavior.

A robots meta tag is an HTML instruction placed in a page’s <head> that tells search engines how to treat that page. Common directives include noindex, nosnippet, and max-snippet, which can limit indexing or restrict how much text appears in search results and previews.

In cyber security, this matters because snippets and cached previews can expose sensitive details even when a page is not meant to be public. Defenders use robots meta tags to reduce accidental disclosure on staging sites, internal docs, login pages, or legal notices. They are also useful when publishers want search visibility without giving away the full text. The limit is important: a robots meta tag is not access control and does not stop a determined visitor or authorized crawler from reaching the page. Attackers may also abuse it to hide malicious or compromised pages from search results, making detection harder.
