Risk monitoring is the ongoing process of watching for signals that a project, system, or control plan may go off track. In cyber security, that can mean tracking changes in scope, overdue actions, new vulnerabilities, failing safeguards, or signs that assumptions are no longer true. The goal is not just to notice problems, but to spot them early enough to reduce impact.
It matters because attackers often benefit when teams stop paying attention to warning signs. Stale risk registers, ignored alerts, and incomplete reviews can let unsafe changes slip into production or keep an incident from escalating fast enough. Defenders use dashboards, threshold alerts, regular reviews, and human judgment to compare current conditions with expected baselines and decide when to escalate, pause work, or add controls.
