Risk-based oversight

A control approach that matches the level of human review to the impact and sensitivity of the use case.

Risk-based oversight is a control approach that scales human review to the sensitivity and potential impact of a task. Instead of requiring the same approval process for every action, it assigns lighter monitoring to low-risk uses and stricter review to high-risk ones. In practice, this means routine automation may run with logging and periodic checks, while consequential actions need a person to verify, challenge, or approve the result.

In cybersecurity, this matters because attackers often target the most trusted or highest-impact workflows. A flawed model output, poisoned dataset, prompt injection, or overly permissive automation can lead to bad access decisions, fraudulent transactions, or unsafe changes to security controls. Risk-based oversight reduces that exposure by matching control strength to consequence: for example, allowing AI to triage alerts, but requiring human approval before account takeover response, policy changes, or privilege escalation. The goal is not to slow everything down, but to keep automation fast where failure is tolerable and carefully supervised where failure is costly.
