Risk-based controls

Security measures chosen according to the sensitivity, impact, and likelihood of harm.

Risk-based controls are security measures chosen to match the sensitivity of the asset, the likely attack paths, and the impact if something goes wrong. Instead of applying the same protections everywhere, defenders increase safeguards where the consequences are higher and keep lighter controls where the exposure is lower.

This matters because cyber security is about reducing real harm, not just checking boxes. In practice, risk-based controls can mean stronger authentication, tighter access limits, sandboxing, logging, approval steps, or network segmentation for systems that handle critical data or can change production services. Attackers often target the weakest over-protected or under-protected point, so matching controls to risk helps close the most dangerous gaps without slowing everything else down. In AI agent deployments, for example, a simple chatbot may need basic filtering, while an agent with API and file access may need least privilege, human approval, and continuous monitoring.
