The REST plugin is an optional Apache Struts component for handling REST-style requests and request bodies. Instead of using only the framework’s standard action flow, it adds a separate processing path for web APIs and JSON or XML-style interactions.
That extra path matters because every parser, mapper, and body reader can become a security boundary. If the plugin is enabled, defenders need to know how it limits request size, how it maps HTTP methods, and how it handles untrusted input before it reaches application code. In attacks, weak REST handling can be used for denial of service by forcing large bodies into memory or for input manipulation if validation is inconsistent. In defense, the plugin can improve API design, but only when paired with strict limits, correct configuration, and regular patching.
