Resourcing gap

A mismatch between the work security teams are assigned and the staff, budget, or skills they have to do it.

A resourcing gap is the mismatch between the security work an organization expects and the staff, budget, time, or skills available to do it. In cyber security, this can mean a team is asked to cover cloud security, incident response, compliance, and AI governance without enough people or tooling to support those tasks.

This matters because security controls only work when they are maintained. Under-resourced teams may miss inventories, skip vendor reviews, leave logs unmonitored, or respond slowly to alerts. Attackers often benefit from that delay, especially when they use shadow IT, unsanctioned AI tools, or weakly governed third-party services. Defenders reduce the gap by scoping priorities, automating repetitive work, adding specialist skills, and matching security mandates to real operating capacity.
