Resolution cap

A limit that restricts the maximum video quality a platform will allow.

A resolution cap is a platform rule that limits the highest video quality a client can receive. Services use it to control which playback tier is allowed after checking factors such as account status, browser support, device capability, and content-protection requirements. If the environment does not meet policy, the platform may offer a lower resolution instead of the full premium stream.

In cyber security, resolution caps are a form of policy enforcement. They help protect licensed content, reduce abuse, and keep playback decisions tied to trusted software and hardware conditions. Attackers may try to bypass a cap by spoofing device capabilities, tampering with client settings, or exploiting gaps in DRM and browser checks. Defenders use caps as part of layered access control, so a failed trust check degrades service safely rather than exposing protected media at full quality.
