A reset-credentials flow is the account recovery process that lets a user set a new password after the system verifies identity. This verification may use email links, one-time codes, recovery questions, or other trusted factors before allowing a password change.
In cyber security, this flow is a high-value target because it can bypass normal login controls. If the verification step is weak, missing, or incorrectly enforced, an attacker may reset a password without valid credentials and take over the account. Defenders treat this workflow as a security boundary: it should be hard to guess, resistant to abuse, rate-limited, logged, and tested like any other authentication path. Monitoring reset requests, failed verification attempts, and unexpected password changes can help detect account takeover attempts early.
