Request ID

A unique identifier attached to a request that helps operators trace and diagnose failures.

A request ID is a unique label attached to a single API call, web request, or internal service request. It lets operators trace that request through logs, gateways, workers, and error handlers so they can see where it succeeded, slowed down, or failed.

In cyber security and reliability work, request IDs are essential for incident response and debugging. They help teams correlate user reports with backend events, distinguish one failed request from many, and spot patterns such as overload, misconfiguration, or abuse. During an attack or outage, request IDs can also support rate-limit analysis, fraud detection, and forensic review by showing how traffic moved across systems. Good logging practice pairs request IDs with timestamps, status codes, and source details so defenders can diagnose problems without exposing sensitive data.
