Representational state

A mode centered on symbols, self-reflection, and organized meaning.

A representational state is a mode of thought centered on symbols, self-reflection, and organizing experience into meaning. In the therapy model described here, it is one of three named mental states, alongside receptive-hypnoid and flow states. It is presented as distinct from inwardly focused suggestibility or deep absorption: the emphasis is on reflecting on and interpreting experience.

In cyber security, the term is not a standard technical category. It is relevant when interactive software is deliberately used to guide attention or subjective experience, as in a clinical game session. Designers and supervisors should account for how prompts, imagery, and transitions may shape interpretation, and use clear boundaries, monitoring, and trained oversight. The term describes a proposed mental mode; it does not by itself establish that a game or therapy is effective or safe.
