Replication Rights

Permissions that let a principal request or synchronize directory data across domain controllers.

Replication rights are Active Directory permissions that let a principal request or synchronize directory data between domain controllers. In practice, they include privileges such as Replicating Directory Changes and Replicating Directory Changes All, which control whether an account can read replicated identity data, including sensitive attributes. These rights are powerful because they sit at the core of Windows domain trust.

In cyber security, replication rights matter because they can be abused for DCSync attacks. If an attacker obtains these permissions, they may impersonate a domain controller and pull credential material through normal replication behavior, often without dropping malware. Defenders should treat replication permissions as Tier-0 access, inventory every account that has them, and verify that the host and activity match a legitimate admin or synchronization service. Unexpected replication requests from non-domain-controller systems are a strong warning sign.
