RemoteIPType

A field that classifies the remote IP address type in telemetry.

RemoteIPType is a telemetry field that classifies the type of a remote IP address, such as public, private, or other address categories. In security tools, it helps analysts quickly filter network events and separate internet-facing connections from internal traffic.

This field matters because hunting and detection logic often depends on it. If a query uses RemoteIPType too narrowly, it can miss suspicious connections that are mislabeled, incomplete, or not covered by the chosen category. In real attacks, command-and-control traffic often uses public destinations to control compromised systems, while defenders may use this field alongside process data, destination reputation, DNS activity, and port information to build stronger detections. By itself, RemoteIPType is useful for triage, but it should be treated as one clue, not proof that all relevant network activity has been captured.
