Remote unauthenticated attacker

An intruder who can reach a system over the network without first logging in.

A remote unauthenticated attacker is an intruder who can connect to a target over the network without first proving identity with a valid login. The “remote” part means they do not need physical access; the “unauthenticated” part means they can reach the service or interface before any password, token, or certificate check blocks them.

This matters because unauthenticated reachability removes one of the strongest basic defenses. If the exposed service is a management console, VPN, API, or firewall interface, the attacker may be able to probe, exploit, or even gain administrative access without a stolen account. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting network exposure, placing admin systems on trusted management networks, enforcing strong authentication, and monitoring for unexpected logins or access attempts. In practice, remote unauthenticated access often signals a high-severity flaw because it can be abused at scale and with little attacker effort.
