Remote tool

Equipment used from a distance to reduce direct human exposure.

A remote tool is equipment or software operated from a distance so people do not need to work directly in a risky area. In cyber security, this usually means a management, monitoring, or control utility that lets an operator access a system without being physically present. Examples include remote administration consoles, out-of-band access devices, and field systems controlled over a network.

Remote tools matter because they reduce human exposure, but they also expand the attack surface. If the tool is weakly authenticated, misconfigured, or compromised, an attacker may use it to move laterally, steal data, or take control of critical assets. Defenders rely on the same idea for safe maintenance, incident response, and operations in hazardous environments. Good practice includes strong authentication, least privilege, logging, segmentation, and a clear fallback if the remote channel fails.
