Remote Maintenance

Off-site technical support that allows authorized parties to service equipment without being physically present.

Remote maintenance is off-site technical support that lets an authorized technician monitor, configure, update, or troubleshoot equipment without being physically present. In cyber security, it is common in operational technology, industrial systems, building controls, and retail controllers where uptime matters and vendors need fast access.

This convenience also creates a security boundary that attackers try to cross. If credentials are stolen, a remote-access tool is exposed, or a web interface is misconfigured, an intruder may be able to change settings, disable alarms, or disrupt physical processes. Defenders reduce the risk by segmenting remote-access networks, enforcing strong authentication, limiting vendor privileges, logging every session, and monitoring for unusual configuration changes or temperature, pressure, or power adjustments.
