Remote compromise means an attacker gains unauthorized access to a system from outside its trusted boundary, often over a network, API, or exposed management interface. The attacker may authenticate with stolen credentials, exploit a vulnerability, or abuse a misconfiguration to reach services they should not control.
In cyber security, this matters because remote access can turn a single weakness into full system control. Once inside, an intruder may steal data, escalate privileges, deploy malware, or alter configurations. Defenders reduce the risk by patching exposed services, removing hard-coded or reused secrets, limiting network access to administration paths, using strong authentication, and monitoring for unusual login or management activity.
