Remote-access tools

Software that lets staff connect to systems from elsewhere, often requiring strict controls after an incident.

Remote-access tools are software that let an authorized user connect to a computer, server, or internal network from another location. Common examples include VPN clients, remote desktop software, and administrative control panels. They are essential for support, maintenance, and business continuity because staff can work on sensitive systems without being physically present.

In cyber security, these tools are high-value targets because they provide a direct path into internal resources. Attackers often try to steal credentials, hijack sessions, or abuse legitimate remote-access services after social engineering or phishing. Defenders respond by limiting who can use them, requiring phishing-resistant MFA, logging every session, and disabling access when suspicious activity is detected. After an incident, organizations may temporarily restrict remote-access tools to stop further intrusion while they reset credentials and review logs.
