Remote access agent

Software component that establishes a remote session between a device and an operator console.

A remote access agent is the software component that runs on a device and creates a live session to an operator console. It handles the connection, authentication, screen control, keyboard and mouse input, file transfer, and sometimes clipboard or command execution. In legitimate use, it supports remote administration, helpdesk work, and device maintenance.

In cyber security, the same agent can become a powerful intrusion tool. If an attacker persuades a user to install an RMM or remote support product, the agent can provide interactive access that looks like normal IT activity. Because many agents are signed and widely trusted, defenders should not rely on file reputation alone. Useful controls include approved-software allowlists, alerting on unsanctioned installers, logging new outbound connections, and reviewing which accounts can authorize remote sessions. Behavioral clues such as a new agent after phishing, an unexpected parent process, or a first-time connection to an unfamiliar server often reveal abuse.
