Registry API

The programmatic interface used to publish, manage, and remove packages.

A Registry API is the programmatic interface a package registry exposes to publish, update, query, and remove packages. Instead of using a web form, developers and release tools call endpoints directly with authentication tokens or other credentials. This API is part of the registry’s control plane, because it governs package ownership, version uploads, metadata changes, and yanking or deletion actions.

In cyber security, the Registry API matters because it can be abused at scale. Attackers who steal a publishing token can automate mass uploads, overwrite package metadata, or rapidly publish lookalike packages before defenders notice. The same automation also helps defenders: secure release pipelines, scoped short-lived keys, trusted publishing, and strong MFA reduce the impact of credential theft. Monitoring API usage, rate spikes, and unusual publish patterns is a common way to detect abuse early.
