Reference data

The set of standards or values a device uses to interpret measurements.

Reference data is the set of trusted standards, tables, labels, or values a device uses to turn raw measurements into meaningful results. A sensor may collect numbers, but reference data tells the system how to interpret them: which color code a reading matches, which packet field value is valid, or which signature corresponds to known malware. In practice, it is the “codebook” behind the output.

In cyber security, reference data matters because many defenses depend on it. Antivirus engines use signature databases, monitoring tools use baseline values, and identity systems rely on trusted certificates, hashes, and allowlists. If attackers can modify reference data, they may hide malicious activity, force false matches, or make detections unreliable. Defenders protect it with integrity checks, updates, version control, and strict access controls so the interpretation layer stays trustworthy.
