Reconfigurable hardware

hardware whose function can change without permanent rewiring or fabrication changes.

Reconfigurable hardware is hardware whose function can change without permanent rewiring or fabrication changes. Instead of being fixed at manufacturing time, its behavior can be altered through configuration, external control, or environment-driven states. Examples include programmable logic and experimental materials whose electrical properties can be switched on demand.

In cyber security, this matters because the same physical device may expose different attack surfaces at different times. Defenders need to verify not only the device’s baseline design, but also the conditions that activate specific modes, interfaces, or signal paths. Attackers may try to abuse reconfigurability to hide functionality, evade inspection, or create transient backdoors that exist only under certain triggers. For defenders, reconfigurable hardware also offers benefits: rapid patching, hardware-level isolation, and the ability to disable risky features without replacing the chip.
