Reason codes are human-readable labels that explain why a security, fraud, or risk system produced a particular result. Instead of showing only a score or a block decision, the system may attach explanations such as IP reputation poor, email and device mismatch, or unusual velocity. These codes are usually generated from the signals that fed the model or rules engine.
In cyber security, reason codes matter because they make automated decisions reviewable. Analysts use them to triage alerts, tune thresholds, spot false positives, and verify that a model is behaving as expected. They are also useful for governance and compliance because they create an audit trail for decisions that affect access, payments, or account actions. In attacks, reason codes can reveal which signals are being exploited or evaded, while defenders use them to understand drift, improve controls, and explain risk to users and investigators.
