Real-time identification is the immediate or near-immediate matching of a person or object against a reference set, often while the scene is still live. In biometric systems, this usually means a camera feed or sensor input is compared to stored templates or watchlists with minimal delay.
It matters in cyber security because speed changes risk. When matching happens instantly, operators may act on a result before it can be reviewed, so false positives, poor image quality, or weak liveness checks can trigger bad decisions. Attackers can try to evade or confuse these systems with spoofed faces, noisy inputs, or overloaded pipelines. Defenders reduce that risk with strict access controls, segmented biometric stores, logging, alert review, and limits on where real-time matching is allowed.
