Real IP address

The user’s original network-facing address, which can reveal location and support tracking.

A real IP address is the user’s original network-facing IP, assigned by the internet service provider or local network and visible unless it is hidden by a VPN, proxy, or privacy relay. It can expose approximate location, identify an organization or home connection, and help websites or attackers correlate activity across sessions.

In cyber security, real-IP exposure matters because it weakens anonymity and can support tracking, profiling, and targeted attacks. A privacy tool that leaks the real IP defeats part of its purpose: a site may again see where the request truly comes from, even if other metadata is masked. Defenders look for proxy bypasses, misrouted traffic, and browser or app paths that escape protected relays. Users and admins reduce risk by keeping browsers and network software updated and by checking that privacy, VPN, or enterprise routing rules are working as intended.
