Read-only deployment

A safe rollout mode where a tool can observe and analyze data without making changes.

A read-only deployment is a safe rollout mode in which a security tool can ingest, inspect, and analyze data but cannot change configurations, block traffic, quarantine files, or trigger other active responses. It is often used when introducing new SOC automation, AI analysts, or monitoring agents into sensitive environments.

This matters because cyber defense tools can cause harm if they act on bad data, false positives, or misunderstood context. In a read-only phase, teams can verify detections, tune thresholds, review audit logs, and measure accuracy before granting write access. Defenders use it to reduce risk during testing and approval, while attackers may try to bypass similar safeguards by impersonating trusted automation or feeding a system misleading telemetry. Read-only deployment helps keep the system bounded, observable, and easier to trust before any irreversible action is allowed.
