RasterField is a Django field from GeoDjango used to store raster geospatial data, such as satellite imagery, terrain models, or elevation grids. Unlike ordinary database fields, it is designed for large, structured spatial datasets that may be backed by files and processed through geospatial libraries. This makes it useful for mapping, analysis, and location-aware applications.
In cyber security, RasterField matters because specialized data handlers create extra attack surface. If an application accepts untrusted raster files or metadata, attackers may try to trigger parser bugs, memory pressure, unexpected file access, or unsafe backend behavior. Defenders should treat raster upload and processing paths as sensitive: validate inputs, restrict file permissions, isolate worker processes, and keep GeoDjango and its native dependencies patched. Even niche features can become high-risk when they touch the filesystem or native geospatial code.
