Ransomware launchpad

A compromised system used to prepare or expand ransomware activity.

A ransomware launchpad is a compromised system that attackers use to prepare, control, or expand a ransomware operation. It is often a server, management console, or security tool that gives access to many endpoints at once. Once inside, intruders can enumerate assets, disable protections, spread payloads, and stage encryption at scale.

This matters because a launchpad turns one foothold into broader enterprise impact. When defenders lose control of a trusted administrative layer, attackers may inherit privileges that would be hard to gain on each machine individually. In real attacks, launchpads are used for lateral movement, remote execution, credential abuse, and coordinated deployment. Defenses focus on hardening management systems, patching quickly, segmenting administrative tools, logging privileged actions, and alerting on unusual changes or outbound connections from security infrastructure.
