Randomized control group

A comparison group in an experiment that does not receive the new treatment, helping isolate cause and effect.

A randomized control group is the baseline group in an experiment that does not receive the new treatment, feature, or security control. Participants are assigned by chance so the control and treatment groups are similar, which helps isolate the real effect of the change instead of confusing it with timing, workload, or user behavior.

In cyber security, randomized control groups are used to test phishing training, fraud checks, detection rules, access policies, and internal AI tools. For example, one employee group may get a new defense while another stays unchanged; if only the treated group improves, the change is more likely to be responsible. Defenders use this method to prove impact before broad rollout, while analysts use it to measure whether an attack, fix, or product actually changed outcomes rather than just coinciding with normal variation.
